This terrific galley kitchen replaced an old one with limited everything--space, counters, storage, and function. While we were structurally confined to the existing space, we were able to grab some much needed kitchen room by pushing the refrigerator and new pantry into an adjacent closet space. This also gave us a wider passage way on one end of the galley, adding to the sense of volume and creating a gathering place not often found in galley kitchens. And we used every other bit of wall space to maximize storage.
The windows, too, were unmovable. We centered the range between the windows which gave us a clear path for venting the hood. The homeowners chose to extend the soapstone counters up onto the wall behind the range and used soapstone for the deep window sills, adjusting the window casing width and to frame the stone and meet the wall cabinets. All was combined with a new tile floor and soft gray subway back splash for a smooth and seamless, well functioning kitchen.
