This kitchen renovation was part of a building addition that created a family room in a 150+ year old farmhouse. Keeping the well-loved cobalt blue Aga range, reusing the stainless Subzero refrigerator, lots of light, ample counter space, maximized storage, and two sinks for two cooks were on the new kitchen wish list. Low ceilings, a back staircase, multiple doors, and limited wall space presented some major challenges.
We used columns instead of walls to maintain structural integrity while visually expanding the kitchen footprint and letting in natural light from both the old side porch and the new family room. The double island configuration gave us room for a main sink on one and a prep sink on the other while greatly increasing the accessible counter space and storage. The end result is a kitchen in an interior pergola that flows easily into the old and new surrounding spaces. Lots of room for a happy dog, too!
