The original rooms in this renovation were a series of connected spaces with little wall space and limited natural light. The somewhat dated kitchen occupied one narrow end with a single off-center window, a penninsula open to a largely unused sun room, and relatively small double tiered island that closed in the cook. With all of this space, surely there was a better way!
The first order of business was to fix the primary cooking arena. We eliminated the partial wall and penninsula providing room for the 10-foot island housing sink, dishwasher, microwave, and seating for 2. By shifting the original window and adding a second, both coming down to the counter, we created the hood focal point while letting in the much needed sunlight. The adjacent breakfast room space now also contains a 10-foot island with a second sink and dishwasher along with seating for 4. We placed cabinetry reserved for dish storage on the inside wall next to the back staircase.
All adjoining rooms got a lift, too. The sun room now contains a breakfast table and new sitting area and the new larger door into the navy blue office added an interesting site line from exterior wall to exterior wall. And we renovated the existing mudroom and butler's pantry to integrate with the other updated spaces.
